Malta - a Mediterranean mix of history and culture

Zante - Home of Loggerhead turtles

Zante is one of the largest of the Ionians covering an area of 150 square miles of mountainous terrain to the West and dense fauna to the east. Zante represents one of the best Greek islands for a heady mix of fantastic nightlife and infectious entertainments, and with its amazing beaches in the north and east you'll find an all-rounder that will keep you on your toes for the duration of your holiday.

The first place you should visit on your Zante holiday must surely be the famous Navagio bay. This isolated beach lies off the south-west coast of the island and is only accessible by boat due to its remoteness. Santorini - The picture postcard Greek island

Santorini is perhaps home to the most iconic of all Greek island landscapes. You'll instantly recognise the white washed buildings that sit upon the steep cliffs produced by the once active island volcano, for this is an image that has enured over the years and has been printed on many a postcard symbolising the Greek islands as a whole. Lying off the mainland of Greece, Lefkas is the Greek island of choice for those looking for peace, quiet and heavenly beaches. Paxos – The traditional Greek Island

Paxos is the smaller cousin of nearby Corfu. This is a place where you can truly immerse yourself in Greek island living. It's far more reserved than Corfu, with life moving at a slower pace and lacking in any of the huge European mainland resort accommodation.

The island itself is eight miles long with the west coast of the island being dominated by huge, steep, white cliffs that are also home to numerous lagoon, blue caves at sea level. The interior of the island is primarily made up of hilly landscapes covered in thick olive tree groves. You'll find that a boat trip is the best way of exploring the island upon arrival, with plenty of excursions leaving from the main ports of Gaios and Lakka.

Rhodes for Ancient Greek history and stunning natural beauty

Rhodes is a land filled with history and intrigue. It was once the home of one of the ancient seven wonders of the world, The Colossus of Rhodes and is packed full of historical artefacts and sites from ancient, bygone eras. Being the site of a once amazing monument, Rhodes attracts visitors from all over the world and is especially busy in the summer months with tourists exploring the island in search of Rhodes many intrigues.

You'll be paying a high premium to stay in this protected area, but for the price you get Lindos' fantastic St Paul's bay and waters that are fantastic for bathing and snorkelling. You could spend a whole day admiring the view of the town once you scale the ascent to the top of the hill on which Lindos acropolis stands. The old architecture of Lindos has been beautifully preserved and the castle that acts as the backdrop for the town is also wonderfully intact and is a great place to discover more of the island's rich history - all-in-all a perfect place for a luxurious Rhodes holiday.

Hurghada - Red Sea Paradise

It's easy to see why the dramatic landscapes of this Red sea resort are so popular with tourists looking for blazing hot sunshine, crystal clear waters and culturally rich Egyptian bazaars. Kefalonia - the largest of all Ionian islands

Kefalonia is located off the west coast of Greece and is the largest of the seven Ionian islands. This picturesque island is great for those looking for a peaceful holiday where tourism has yet to really take hold. The strange shape of the island, with its many coastal inlets and coves, has been formed by centuries of battering Ionian waves that have effectively carved the rock like some deranged sculptor! The conditions of the sea and prevalent winds make the area a favourite for those looking for world class sailing, this also means that the island is perfect if you are looking for a Kefalonia holiday that combines all the usual trappings of a luxury all-inclusive holiday with sailing tuition and island exploration.

Perhaps the best place on the island for admiring your surroundings is Myrtos bay. Costa de Almeria - Spanish resort holidaying for the Connoisseur

For a quieter alternative to the brashy Spanish resorts of Costa Brava and the Costa del Sol, why not venture to the southernmost point of Spain and the Costa de Almeria. A closer look at La Palma

After briefly looking at La Palma with our overview of the Canary islands last week, what better way to follow up than with a look at one its most coveted islands, La Palma.

A holiday to La Palma can be almost anything you want it to be. Vast green mountains dominate the the island along with sweeping ravines that cut through the picture postcard setting. But all this seems like a minor distraction when you clap eyes upon what was once the biggest volcano in the world, La Caldera de Taburiente. The volcano was about 20km across and has now eroded away the landscape to the extent that it has created its own national park. This curious setting is in the North of the island and no La Palma holiday is complete without a visit to this wonderful, awe-inspiring place.

If you are looking for the classic beach holiday, La Palma is not the best destination for you, but you will find a small selection of very inhabitable beaches in the areas of Puerto Naos and Los Cancajos. Puerto Naos epitomises La Palma holidays; it's laid back, peaceful and a Canary island paradise. The beach itself is made up of the island's black volcanic sand and is a vast 500m expanse across the La Palma coastline. Madeira - Floating Garden of the Atlantic

Madeira is a an island off the coast of Portugal. But believe this myth at your peril! For Lanzarote has an abundance of holiday options that can often be found at wonderfully cheap prices if you are willing to hold out for a last minute holiday deal.

Holidays to Lanzarote can include many different activities and with its fantastic selection of waves and abundant sea life the island is popular with those looking to dive and snorkel. Head to Bodrum for Christmas!

For a Winter holiday with a difference, try heading to Turkey and the lovely resort of Bodrum. Located in the South of Turkey on the Bodrum Peninsula, Bodrum holidays offer you beaches and sun mixed with a little culture and history. It's also a great place to head if you're looking to spend your Christmas abroad in a place that is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and friendly residents. Bodrum itself does not have its own beach, instead it boasts a picturesque marina. Gumbet, on the other hand, is a little livelier and is longer at 600m. Along this stretch there are plenty of watersports to indulge your active side and a fun, young atmosphere permeates the air.

If you enjoy your holidays with a hint of culture and history, then you can visit some of Bodrum's impressive attractions such as Bodrum castle or its grand mausoleum. The castle of St. Peter is particularly impressive with its vast hall of exhibits and fortifications that remain intact since the crusades of the 15th century. You could also take a stroll to the windmills of Bodrum. Stationed at the top of the biggest hill in the town, the walk to the top to see these old crumbling structures is hard, but well worth it when you see the views of the town from the top. You will also be able to see the Greek island of Kos up here on a clear day and yachts as they return to the marina below.

It's nearly ski season and you're going away on your first ever ski trip. You've bought everything you think you'll need, your ski pass, your ski and boot rental and those all-important beginners lessons. But what about those small yet important things that you're almost certain to have forgotten?

The difference between a well packed bag and one that is badly prepared could effect the overall enjoyment factor of your first ski trip....Trust me, you really don't want that.

So take the time to read through this simple list of of things that you should make are in your bag.

Apart from the obvious things like passports, insurance documents and currency, you need to make sure you have items that you may think you do not necessarily require, but are nonetheless very important. Photos for lift passes are something that is often forgotten but can completely ruin your holiday. Imagine the absolute dismay when you get to the chair lift and you're turned away because you forgot to bring such a small yet indispensable item for your pass.

What about sun cream? The sun on the mountain is extremely strong and for this reason you need to make sure you take sun-cream and lip balm to deal with the effects of the sun. Its a fact that the sun is more extreme on the mountain because it bounces off the reflective surface of the snow, meaning you don't just have the biting cold to contend with but also the searing sun.

Places to see before you die

In the first of a series of places to see before you die, we look at three locations of eye-opening beauty that will leave you with a burgeoning sense of wanderlust.

Our first entrant is a bona-fide icon. Christ the Redeemer is a 40metre tall statue looming large over Brazil's capital, Rio. It's the first thing you will notice when you land here and the sheer scale and detail of this huge monolith will endure in the memory for a lifetime. I could spend a week writing about how this statue was built, but I'll leave you, loyal reader, to discover this by your own accord.

Next up, why not go for a scuba at the Great Barrier Reef. An obvious choice you may say. but once you have visited this vast haven for marine life then you really will appreciate why this destination is such a clear-cut choice. When you take to the pristine waters you'll see the world of Finding Nemo come to life and once your done in the water you can take to once of the neighbouring idyllic beaches for a relaxation session.

For something completely different, take a trip to Iceland and take a dip in the Blue Lagoon. This mystical place is surround by untouched, white snow but you'll experience quite the opposite when you step into the bath-warm waters and take in the breathtaking wonder of this all-round once-in-a-lifetime cerebral experience.

The longest flights in the World

No one really likes plane travel. The thought of being cooped up with a hundred other people at 30,000ft is enough to send shudders down the spine of even them most ardent of travellers, but flying brings so many benefits that far out-weigh the negatives and the initial trepidation is cast aside once we reach our often blissful vacation spot.

However, some people are luckier than others. In my opinion, anything over 10 hours can be deemed as a 'long-flight'. My longest was 13hours and the fact that I was ill throughout it's duration made the whole thing completely unbearable.

Compare this to the longest flight in the World and my personal best seems positively pedestrian.

At almost 19 hours, Newark to Singapore is officially the longest flight in the World -that's almost a whole day and is measured at 9,535 miles. Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of embarking on such a flight, nor do I know of anyone who has, but I can imagine there are plenty of passengers pacing up and down their cabins non-stop in the hope of staving off potential DVT!

The second longest flight is L.A to Singapore, (there seems to be a pattern emerging here), and is 17 hours and 20 minutes, or 8,770 miles. If only Singaporeans knew of this American feat of endurance when welcoming these unfortunate tourists!

In third place we have Qantas airways offering a comparatively bearable Sydney to Dallas at 15.25 hours and 8,578 miles.

You may have noticed that there is a distinct lack of European destinations on this run-down. This is because of the geographical location of Europe in relation to major cities in the World offering these aptly named ultra long-haul flights. Until technology advances to the extent that a non-stop flight to Australia becomes available, us Europeans should be thankful!

Need to get away but have the minimal amount of time to spare?

Then why not book a weekend city break? You'd be surprised at the amount of things you can do in such a small amount of time. For best results choose somewhere that offers minimal flying time whilst encompassing the widest array of ideas for your itinerary.

At just two hours, the flight to Barcelona is bearable enough to spend a weekend away in this richly entertaining city. Head straight for the colourful La Rambla on your first day to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. Relax for a couple of hours whilst strolling from one end to the other observing the street artists and assortment of vendors. Next you could visit the sea-life aquarium or the world famous Nou camp for a guided tour, before finishing the day with a traditional Spanish platter. Your trip is incomplete until you have savoured the architecture of Gaudi, so spend your second day visiting his most famous works. In particular the grotesque yet beautiful Sagrada Familia. This marvel is his most awe-inspiring work, so detailed that it is still being constructed to this very day.

London is an obvious but excellent choice for a short break away. Easily accessible from anywhere in the U.K, the capital is quick and simple to get to by train or car. Once there, the transport links around the city are unrivalled, giving you the chance to visit a greater amount of the city's attractions in a condensed period of time. A trip on a tour bus will ensure you see as much of the city's attractions as possible, whilst a ticket on the London Eye will mean you get a feel for the scope and excitement that permeates the air of this iconic city. Once you've soaked up the key sights of Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, you could literally go to town and catch a show at London's world famous West End.

Paris is another city that is within easy travelling distance of the U.K. The Eurostar takes just over two hours from London and once in 'The City of Love' you will discover a well-oiled tourism machine that makes it simple to draw up an itinerary that takes in all of the main sites in as short a time as possible. This city isn't just for lovestruck couples, the whole family will be entertained by the vastness of activities available. The Eiffel Tower and Arc De Triomphe are obligatory attractions but don't forget Paris' World class art museums such as The Louvre and Centre Pompidou for contrasting collections from the world of art.

Thorpe Park: A review

I was lucky enough to visit thrill-seekers heaven, Thorpe Park last weekend and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. Not just by the park itself and the rides available but also by my own resolve in handling the rides and getting through them with nothing worse than a rather hoarse throat!

Spectacular rides are abound here. I managed to ride all of them with the exception of the gargantuan Stealth as it had broken down by the time I had plucked up the courage to sit in one of its imposing carriages.

We started off easy, (or so I thought), with the 50ft drop of Detonator. Rising slowly into the air you begin to sense that this ride is not to be taken lightly. Once at the top of the vertical drop, a countdown commences before the platform on which you are sitting freefalls to the ground, taking your breath away and bouncing your eyeballs to the back of your head before coming to a sharp stop. It's over before you know it and an excellent way to start the day.

Next up was Nemesis Inferno. A free-standing roller-coaster that mixes twisting inversions with near misses and sheer drops. I really didn't think I would muster the courage for this one but the queue was so short that I didn't even have time to jump the railings. This was the biggest roller-coaster I had ever been on and really shook me up to the extent that I had my eyes closed for much of it! By the time I had begun to enjoy it, the ride was coming to a close and it had well and truly beaten me.

Despite my nervous disposition after Nemesis, I decided that I had actually enjoyed it in a strange kind of way. I think this was perhaps due to the fact that I felt a sense of achievement in being able to say that I had actually ridden such a beast of a ride! Collossus was our next port of call boasting an impressively nauseating 10 looped inversions. From the start, this ride did not let up. A long, drawn-out incline was followed by a banked drop down to the left that left one's stomach at the top of the slope. Then came the loops! Certainly not for the faint of heart you find yourself completely disorientated as you attempt to follow the route of your carriage along the track. The crown for best ride of the day went to Collossus with ease after this amazing ride.

Next up were the comparatively tame rides of Rush, Samurai and Quantum - all good in there own right, but not a patch on the big boys.

After getting completely drenched on Tidal Wave we finished the day on Saw (based on the movie of the same name if you didn't know). After a 90 minute queue that only worked to heighten the anticipation further, we entered Saw's inner sanctum. Flashing imagery, murderous noises and moody ride attendants all block your path before you finally board this hell-ride. There's no going back from here and after a short yet nonetheless thrilling journey out into the stark light and cold of the outdoors you begin a vertical climb up to the top of an inverted drop staring at nothing but the clouds. Once at the top the ride really begins. The drop was the single most stomach-churning feature of the whole day and from there on in I could barely keep my eyes open due to the fear as I was thrown around my seat for the next minute! This ride easily took the crown from Collossus due to the sheer terror that it imparted on me before and during the ride.

All-in-all Thorpe park offers one of the best days out in the whole of the U.K and offers great value for money if you book your trip with accommodation. Our tickets along with two nights of decent Travelodge sleeping were just £80 each!

Bangkok - City of contrasts

With its heady mix of century old history and ultra-modern urbanism, Bangkok offers the discerning visitor a picture of South East Asia that is without equal in the whole of the region.

The phrase 'melting-pot' is often overused to describe many cities, but it perfectly encapsulates Bangkok with its steaming temperatures, famous cuisine and mix of locals and travellers.

You'll need a week to really appreciate sprawling Bangkok. The vast range of ancient temples dotted around the city demand a couple of days alone and you'll need a full day to really appreciate the delights on offer in the gargantuan malls that dominate the city centre.

Next on your 'To See' list is the King's residence - The Grand Palace. This famous palace was built in 1782 and features grandeur on an epic scale and is the home of many of the most important temples in Bangkok.

For a glance at Bangkok's sporting pedigree, visit Lumpinee boxing stadium for front row seats at Thai boxing. You'll feel the blood and sweat emanating from the boxers all from the comfort of the best seats in the house .

For the ultimate shopping experience head to the Central World Plaza where the World's most prestigious stores are all assembled under one roof. You'll also find a huge food court and a mass of entertainments to keep you interested all day. Beware the tiny independent stores on the top floors as you are liable to lose yourself for days on end in a maze of cheap electronics and souvenirs!

For a different side of Bangkok be sure to visit Khao San Road. This place is the World traveller's paradise. People from every country in the World gather here for a different fix. Visit at night for amazing night-life, great food and endless amounts of street entertainments from uber-talented performers.

Thailand caters extremely well for those searching for wanderlust but has becoming saturated with travellers to the extent that it can be difficult to discover the 'real' Thailand. But if you're looking for your first shoe-string experience then this is certainly the destination for you. The likes of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are not quite as well catered for which can drive down your overall costs as getting around is cheaper but harder in terms of planning.

India is also an excellent destination for the discerning traveller. You'll meet plenty of like minded travellers who live on far less than you and are often a fountain of knowledge when it comes to tips and approaches to travelling around this unsubscribed yet picturesque part of the World. It may be wise to avoid India if you have a weak stomach though as Western food can be very difficult to come by and your palette will have to adapt quickly to the spice heavy cuisine.

China is also a wonderfully cheap yet immersive option - especially if you like your trips to be laden with plenty of culture and eye-opening history. This option is perhaps the most left-field though as it will present you with a complete and utter departure from Western living. You should brace yourself for quite the culture shock so perhaps only approach this option if you are a seasoned traveller!

Of course, if you are not ready to live within your means then none of these options are going to suit you! Budgeting becomes easy after a couple of weeks on the road, but you have to restricted in what you purchase and your itinerary needs to be cut to the minimum when it comes to activities and tours. Always seek out the cheapest options and consult the locals when it comes to the site-seeing.

A guide to Crete

Bristling with more history than is conceivable, the Greek island of Crete is famous for it's food, sun, beaches and culture.

As the largest of all the Greek islands,Crete is almost a country in itself with such a high population and land-mass. In my opinion, the best time to visit Crete is between May and July. At the start of the peak season, these months offer the best value for money whilst the mercury doesn't quite push the headier heights of the latter months of the holiday season.

With three airports, flights to Crete are regular and competitively priced and fly from all major airports in the UK. Be sure to check all flight operators before you go for the best possible price and book through a reputable holiday broker.

There is plenty to do in Crete. If you're looking for entertainment or something for the kids then you could do far worse than checking out the famous Aquaworld aquarium in Hersonissos. Entry prices are extremely reasonable at under 10 Euros for adults and children and once in, you will be enchanted by turtles and gain a new appreciation for Pythons (once you've summoned the courage to pick one up!).

Crete is also ripe for walking with an impressive mountain range and the Samaria gorge national park which hosts a picturesque 10 mile walk that takes in views aplenty and idyllic Greek villages. Along this undulating hike you will discover some of the best views on the island along with a host of indigenous species such as the Cretan mountain goats!

If history and culture appeals then take the time to visit the wealth of monuments and buildings dedicated to the century old civilisations that Crete has been influenced by. The Minoan palace lies in Knossos and is the ultimate symbol of the sheer size and power of the once great Minoan civilisation that flourished in Crete in the 27th Century BC. I also recommend the sacred monastery of Arkadi in the foothills of Mt Psiloritis with its superb views and intriguing history.

Exeter - Historic city of the South

Exeter is a popular city in the South that boasts a host of cultural and historic sites for anyone looking to experience a different aspect of holidaying in the picturesque Westcountry.

Being a once thriving Roman settlement, there is a whole host of impressive ruins and relics left over from this period, most notable of which are the city walls that can be traced around the city. Exeter also allows access to it's impressive centuries old underground passages that twist and turn under this quirky city.

Remnants of historical eras remain throughout the city, such as the vast cathedral which is perhaps the biggest draw that the city holds. Inside, vast stained glass windows allow in a shower of light that permeates the whole building, lending a joyous atmosphere that is often absent from many cathedrals of this size. Outside, is cathedral green - a luscious combination of closely cut grass and well-designed paving that is often accompanied by a range of people who come to enjoy the sunshine or their lunch-break!

St Nicholas Priory is also well worth a look. It's an ex-monastery turned museum that is now council owned and details life in the Tudor era with a range of artefacts and hands-on displays. This interesting attraction has points of interest inside and out and is well worth a visit. Lying in the Princesshay part of town, you are also right next to the main shopping district of Exeter. There are stores galore here and you are sure to leave with a gaping hole in your wallet, especially when you catch a glimpse of the nearby Reiss, American Apparel and All Saints boutiques.

If walking is your thing then take a stroll down to the beautiful quay for a warm coffee or an ice-cold cider whilst people watching or swan feeding. There are a number of pubs and eateries along the quay, most notable of which is the excellent 'Waterfront' providing you with home-made pizzas and drinks at very reasonable prices.

If Exeter itself doesn't charm you, why not broaden your horizons and visit nearby Powderham castle for more medieval culture, or perhaps Exmouth beach for excellent surf, or failing that Crealy Adventure Park (especially if you have kids in tow that need to be suitably tired out!)

What will £40,000 get you in this day in age? A fairly hefty deposit on a house? A top of the range sports car? Yep, both of these are worthwhile investments that are sure to bring hours of pleasure in the future. But how about spending all of that well earned buck on one night of pure, frivalous unadulterated hotel luxury!?

For many of us Summer is a time for escaping the UK and eloping to far-flung destinations in search of blazingly hot sunshine and bath-water temperature seas. But, in doing so these folk are missing out on a plethora of holiday destinations that lay right on their door-step.

Holiday Hardship: 1 Pound to 1 Euro

With the Euro currently matching the Pound almost 1 for 1 in the exchange rate, holidays in Euro zone have never offered such scant value.

Just five years ago the pound was riding high in the currency exchange market with one pound able to buy €1.5. At present the pound is worth around €1.12. This marks a dip in the value of the pound of around 25%.
The recession of 2008 could be largely attributed to this weakness in value. During the recession the pound saw significant losses, but much of Europe was experiencing similar economic turmoil so holiday makers were not affected significantly.

The aftermath of the recession has really hit the pound hardest.With Britain's close economic links with America, the knock-on effect of America's disastrous approach to the credit crunch saw the pound struggle further whilst the Euro began to strengthen. The Euro bank also took a hard-line approach to inflation. Whilst the British banks cut interest rates drastically to encourage spending and boost the economy, the European central bank refused such measures, leading to a quicker recovery.

So, post-recession the pound may not be in as bad shape as the Dollar, but it lags behind the far superior Euro.

For holiday-makers, the struggling Pound does have its plus points.It represents fantastic value for tourists from Europe who can experience savings of around 20%. If you know that you require a car before you leave for your destination, then shop around online for the best price first. Searching for the best deal online also provides you with an idea of what you should be paying for your vehicle when you get to a dealership abroad.

If you are buying abroad, be sure to check for any hidden costs that the retailer may try to implement into your deal. You may think you are getting a good price, but come the end of your tenure you may find extra costs for mileage and insurance so read all small print before signing. If you have purchased prior to arrival, make sure that the car you pick up from the airport matches the one you have agreed upon. If it isn't, the company has breached it's half of the agreement and you could recoup any extra costs.
