Kalkan - a traditional Mediterranean fishing village on Turkey's Lycian coast

Built around a beautiful harbour at the foot of the pine clad Taurus Mountains, picturesque Kalkan has to be one of Turkey’s most unspoilt resorts. The winding, steep streets of this idyllic sun drenched Mediterranean fishing village pass between understated white washed houses with shuttered windows and wooden balconies that overflow with bougainvilleas.

Famed for its restaurants, in Kalkan you can get a variety of foods from traditional Turkish meals to international cuisine. My personal favourite is Ali Baba’s up on the hill where the prices are very reasonable, the food excellent, the atmosphere relaxed and friendly, and the view lovely. In fact from just about everywhere in Kalkan there is a fine view of the bay with its blue shimmering waters dotted with islands, and many of the roof terrace restaurants and bars offer a brilliant vista. There are also a lot of harbourside restaurants where you can see the fishing boats come in with the day’s catch. Many of the bars have live music, ranging from traditional Turkish music to jazz.

Kalkan appeals to those who want to relax in calm and beautiful surroundings, and is loved by the sophisticated traveller who might also enjoy Tuscany or the Dordogne. However a holiday in Kalkan won’t be costing you Tuscany or Dordogne sort of prices.

Accommodation options range from villa rental, to hotels, and there are plenty of stunningly reasonable package holidays to Kalkan available from the UK.
