Santorini - The picture postcard Greek island

Santorini is perhaps home to the most iconic of all Greek island landscapes. You'll instantly recognise the white washed buildings that sit upon the steep cliffs produced by the once active island volcano, for this is an image that has enured over the years and has been printed on many a postcard symbolising the Greek islands as a whole. Despite lying 100km away from the mainland, this is an unmistakeably Greek destination and one that will endure in the memory once you have visited this white isle.

The beaches are perhaps Santorini's most popular draw. Unlike most of the beaches that lie in the Greek islands, Santorini is one of the few to boast volcanic beaches that are made up of red and black sand spewed from the country's dormant volcano. The most recognisable of Santorini's beaches has to be Red Beach. Located near the ancient city of Akrotiri. A path leads down through the rocky red and black volcanic hills to this eye catching beach with sand that can be hot to step on so take a good pair of sandals to protect your tootsies!

Kamari is the most famous of the resorts on the island and is also home to a great beach. The black sandy beach here is perfect for those looking for plenty of space for ball games and activities whilst remaining within close proximity to the town's touristy amenities and restaurants. Kamari is possibly the best choice for a Santorini holiday, especially if you are looking for somewhere that can offer you a little it of everything. The gorgeous beach, the placid water and the great range of touristy amenities makes it a fantastic all-round choice.

For a day that doesn't involve relaxation on one of Santorini's beaches, you must make time to visit the island's volcano. There are many tours that take you in and around the volcano that are perfect if you would like an in depth look at this wonderful site whilst learning a few things along the way including how the island itself was formed and how it was responsible for the destruction of a whole Empire. Another fantastic place to visit on the island is the ancient ruins of the city of Thira. This town was once the most important on the whole of the island and is still home to public baths and century-old tombs.

Santorini is also one of the most popular islands for producing wine in all of Greece. You will fine fine wines being offered all over the island with indigenous white wines having an extremely dry and citrus taste that can be attributed to the volcanic soil of the island itself.

Head to Bodrum for Christmas!

For a Winter holiday with a difference, try heading to Turkey and the lovely resort of Bodrum. Located in the South of Turkey on the Bodrum Peninsula, Bodrum holidays offer you beaches and sun mixed with a little culture and history. It's also a great place to head if you're looking to spend your Christmas abroad in a place that is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and friendly residents. There are plenty of holiday operators out there who are currently offering a wealth of low cost holidays to those looking for a Christmas getaway with a difference.


Bodrum itself does not have its own beach, instead it boasts a picturesque marina. Expensive looking yachts and boats crowd the marina piers, many of them offering trips out into the seas to explore the numerous reefs and coves off the shoreline. You can book yourself in for numerous diving and snorkelling trips here but if diving isn't your thing you could also take the chance to visit the nearby Greek islands of Kos and Rhodes to make the most of your holiday.


If you prefer something a little more active Bodrum has two water parks to choose from as well as horse riding and river rafting for something a little more extreme! The white water rafting takes place on the nearby Koprulu river and often includes a BBQ - a great substitute for the traditional Xmas dinner!


The beaches around Bodrum offer crystal clear waters and walks surrounded by palm trees. You can find beaches just outside the town along the white, sandy coast and in the nearby beach towns of Gumbet and Bitez which are both excellent places for day excursions whilst on your Bodrum holiday. The beach of Bitez is shingle and provides visitors with free loungers and hammocks as well as great paddling waters and snorkelling conditions. Gumbet, on the other hand, is a little livelier and is longer at 600m. Along this stretch there are plenty of watersports to indulge your active side and a fun, young atmosphere permeates the air.


If you enjoy your holidays with a hint of culture and history, then you can visit some of Bodrum's impressive attractions such as Bodrum castle or its grand mausoleum. The castle of St. Peter is particularly impressive with its vast hall of exhibits and fortifications that remain intact since the crusades of the 15th century. You could also take a stroll to the windmills of Bodrum. Stationed at the top of the biggest hill in the town, the walk to the top to see these old crumbling structures is hard, but well worth it when you see the views of the town from the top. You will also be able to see the Greek island of Kos up here on a clear day and yachts as they return to the marina below.

Clubbing holidays in Tenerife

For a cheap, last minute holiday that offers you a fantastic array of night-life options you would be hard pressed to find a better European option than Tenerife.


As part of the Canary Islands, Tenerife boasts sun all year-round and has an abundance of luscious green landscapes and all important sandy beaches that come complete with crystal clear seas. The interior of the island is dominated by rocky, volcanic sights providing a startling geographical contrast to the outskirts of the island.

For those of you looking for the liveliest resorts on your holiday in Tenerife, head to the South of the island for the likes of hard-partying Playa de Las Americas. Here you will find an abundance of cheaply priced bars and clubs offering cocktails that are perfect for cheap holiday thrills. Similarly, Los Cristianos is a part of the island that offers a party atmosphere with plenty of clubbing options.

If you are staying in Playa de Las Americas, head to the central strip, or the 'Veronicas', where you'll find the busiest bars and clubs and be treated to tunes being played by famous guest DJs. Playa de las Americas is also home to exciting go-kart tracks and the awesome new Thai themed water park, Siam park - the perfect place for soaking up the sun whilst enjoying yourself to the max!

Los Cristianos is a slightly smaller resort but does offer a range of Irish pubs and traditional Spanish tapas bars that may suit those looking for something a little different to the all-action approach of Playa de Las Americas. There is also a range of cuisines on offer that are sure to appeal to everyone in your group. The beach of Los Cristianos is 'Playa de Las Vista' and is known as one of Tenerife's finest with its golden sands and warm, shallow waters - perfect for a spot of people watching!
